Chasing love

I'm trying to bond with my daughter. She's a complete daddy's girl and keeps saying she doesn't want mommy anymore so I took her to the park for some alone time. There is this lovely shaded spot where I sat with her on my lap and we sang and talked for a while. I tried to take a picture of the both of us but just as I pressed the shutter she slipped out of the frame.

Just like that small moment of shared happiness, her love for me is elusive.
We pulled out the kiddie pool this afternoon. Summer is almost over so we wanted them to enjoy every last bit of the warm weather. My daughter splashed in it while my son took a nap.

Go ahead, zoom in, you'll see his eyes are closed. My daughter took a nap later, while we were out shopping. My son gallantly offered his shoulder to her.

They resemble each other so much and yet they are so different. I hope I can be the mother that fulfills both of their needs.

Homeward bound

We're returning home after spending four days celebrating with my family. I spent one day cooking with my mom, two aunts and sister. We spent the next two days feasting on all the yummy food.

The kids had so much fun playing with their cousins. They jumped, yelled, screamed, fought, made up and laughed together.

This was tiring for the grown ups.

Somehow my sister and I still managed to get dolled up for the day.

Now I need a vacation to recover from my vacation.

Let the festivities begin

They saw the new moon in Guyana - it is officially Eid! Yay! In our house that means bring on the henna!

House of peace

When my parents returned to their apartment after being away for a few months they were surprised to find eggshells strewn around the balcony. They thought it was debris from the apartment above. This morning we discovered the real source of the eggshells - baby pigeons!

Aren't the incredibly cute? Look at the little yellow down on them! In our culture we believe that when pigeons roost at a house they bring peace to that household. Well I think it's true, look siblings sitting peaceably next to each other!

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach

Even though  I am a pretty good cook, I've been struggling to find the way to my husband's heart through food. It's harder for me than the average wife, because my husband is a really good cook himself, so he is something of a food connoisseur. He is not easily impressed. One of his favorite dishes is a Bengali desert called Dud Shemoi. It is comprised of semolina noodles boiled with milk, sugar cardamom and cinnamon. Although it seems simple to make, it  is very difficult to get just right. My mom is the reigning queen of Dud Shemoi. She always has to make an extra batch for my husband because he loves it so much. I've tried making it before and failed miserably. One time it was too clumpy, the other time it was too runny and another time it tasted burnt. Well today I made a batch and my husband took a bowl and declared that it was perfect! Finally! I hear the chambers of his heart unlocking =).

Bliss

I left these rapt little faces watching cartoons this morning to go for my run.

I never thought I would crave running so much but I'm addicted to the beauty of a calm summer morning.

I came home to a breakfast of eggs and potatoes and later my son who is obsessed  with this vibrating bee, gave me a massage!

What a wonderful way to start my day!

Copycat

My daughter definitely learns by watching her brother. She always wants to do what he's doing so when she can across him doing this

she had to join him.

Thank god he's a patient big brother, well at least most of the time =)

Backyard fun

The roadways are no longer safe! At least not in my backyard. Here is my son, driving my daughter to a "restaurant". They don't even fit in the car together - my little cutie has to hold the door shut to keep from falling out.

Here they are at the restaurant. He pulled out her chair for her, because that's how I'm raising him - to be a gentleman =).She ordered ice-cream and he ordered rice. They "pretend" ate their imaginary food faster than I have ever seen them eat in real life.

Then they got back in their car and drove off into the sunset - literally as the sun was setting and it was time for bed!

They wanted to water their plants, even though it was just about to rain.

Cooks in the kitchen

After modeling her new princess apron, my daughter helped me wash some potatoes.

She insisted in carrying them all by herself and look so cute that I had to give her some cuddles.

Then she helped me peel some onions, grind some spice and season the chicken.

My son was out grocery shopping with my husband, but when he came home, he pitched in by peeling the eggs.

It took longer than usual to prepare the meal with so many cooks in the kitchen, but it was also a lot more fun!
